In thanksgiving for the life of Rita Belletty.

Rita Belletty

Rita Belletty

Today I attended the funeral of Rita Belletty who was our fantastic parish volunteer at St John Bosco parish in Woodley and an inspirational  campaigner . Rita had a passion for social justice, love for the poor and care of the earth. The readings she had chosen for her requiem mass were very apt as the gospel was Mathew 25:31-46 “Whatever you do for the least of these brothers of  mine you do for me.”

Rita was instrumental in helping her parish to achieve the livesimply award in 2012. In fact St John Bosco was the first parish  to achieve this award. She was also inspired by  Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’ : Care for Our Common Home.

” The poor and the earth are crying out. Oh Lord seize us with your power and light, helps us to protect all life; to prepare for a better future, for the coming  of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty”.  Extract from a christian prayer in union with creation from Laudato Si’ said at her funeral.

Rita, along with other volunteers and supporters from Portsmouth Diocese who have died will be remembered at our Memorial Mass on Saturday 23rd  November at 11am at St Edmund Church, The Avenue Southampton.

Running for CAFOD in the Great South Run

Jane McCarthy

Jane McCarthy

After hearing about CAFOD’s work at the supporter’s meeting in Basingstoke in February Jane McCarthy from St John Bosco parish in Woodley decided to get involved and raise funds for CAFOD. Her family had always been supporters of CAFOD especially her Dad who was a regular monthly donor until he passed away. A keen runner Jane started training for The Great South Run which takes place on  Sunday 22nd October. The race is 10 miles or 16 kilometres around the streets and historic places in Portsmouth. She has set a just giving page and is asking for sponsorship so please support her by going to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/janemccarthy77

Many thanks to Jane for a fantastic way to fundraise for CAFOD and we hope to post some photos of her on the Great South Run later on. Has Jane inspired you to fundraise for CAFOD? If so do let us know so that we can celebrate your achievements on our blog.
