Respond to the Pope’s call to pray for and celebrate the gift of creation .

The season of creation runs from 1st September to 4th October (the feast day of St Francis of Assisi) To mark the season of creation the Pope has called us to pray and celebrate, reflect on our lifestyles and take prophetic and courageous decisions to restore connections that make us whole.

CAFOD has produced a novena to St Francis to be prayed in this Season of Creation.

Nine brief reflections asking St Francis of Assisi to pray for us and our world, based on his beautiful Canticle of the Sun. This novena is a song of penitence and praise, guiding us to care for the earth and for our most vulnerable sisters and brothers, especially the Amazon peoples. They are currently under grave risk from coronavirus, given their fragile situation, often in remote locations far from government services.

Communities with whom we work are reporting a sharp increase in predatory attacks on land. People smugglers are also active and those being trafficked are in more danger than ever, having no access to healthcare. The pandemic shows us that “we have not heard the cry of the poor and our seriously ill planet” warns Pope Francis, describing this as “a time to choose what matters and what passes away”. (Urbi et Orbi, 2020)

Use these video prayers over nine days or at nine moments of personal prayer. Each has four phases: Canticle; Amazon voice; penitential prayer; plea for intercession.

Pray

Let us pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered but shared in a just and respectful manner.  Huge changes are needed and will need a lot of prayer so a global pray intention for the month worldwide is needed.

Personal Response

We are challenged to look at the connectivity across the globe and how our lifestyles and consumerism has an effect on this plunder of the world resources and poverty of people. This season of creation could be time to make some change our lifestyle and prioritising relationships and community.
