Meeting with Steve Brine MP for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford

Many thanks to Steve and Beth Taylor who organised a meeting with Steve Brine MP for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford as part of our Parliament in Your Parish campaign.

Beth told me Steve listened carefully to our questions and assured us Climate Change was being taken seriously and the government have legislated to achieve net zero .Steve did attend COP26 and he will be ensuring that the promises made there are fulfilled. Steve’s own personal commitments have been to replace my gas boiler, reduce flying (his children -age 14 and under) have only been on an aeroplane once in their lives, reduce meat consumption and try to cycle as much as possible.

Beth summed up the meeting thanking Steve for giving up his time in the difficult circumstances as as he had had to join the meeting by phone whilst waiting in the Commons to vote on a number of legislative amendments.

“He did a very courteous job in somewhat difficult circumstances and deserved our thanks for that.  We noted that he also claims to have made changes in his own lifestyle in response to climate change. He said he had not heard of Laudato Si so a copy of the encyclical is being sent to him.”

Thank you so much to Steve and Beth for organised the meeting and to Mike, Lisa, Mary Mike and Liz who attended the meeting.

Meeting with James Sunderland MP for Bracknell

Many thanks to Cathy Hill our parish volunteer at Corpus Christi Wokingham for organising a meeting with James Sunderland MP for Bracknell on Friday 12th November as part of CAFOD’s Parliament in Your Parish campaign .

Cathy told me ” This much postponed meeting took place in person at the constituency office with James Sunderland, his chief of staff and six CAFOD supporters – four from St Joseph’s parish in Bracknell and two from Corpus Christi in Wokingham – on the last day of COP26 in Glasgow. We were able to express our concerns on AID, distribution of VACCINES and unpayable DEBT but unfortunately ran over our allotted 45 minutes before covering the climate crisis in any detail. Mr Sunderland was welcoming and listened to us . He was able to find out figures for the number of vaccines given away by the government to those in need and, also, the numbers pledged by the end of this year and 2022.”

Thank you to Anne, Bill, Kate , Louise and John who also attended the meeting.

Meeting with Kit Malthouse MP for North West Hampshire

Many thanks to Anne Reilly our parish volunteer at St Michael’s Tadley for organising a meeting with Kit Malthouse MP for North West Hampshire as part of our Parliament in Your Parish campaign. Thank you to all those who attended the meeting and shared their concerns about the climate crisis and debt cancellation for the poorest countries.

Anne told me ” Kit was very enthusiastic in regards to reducing the impact of climate change, and wished more people wanted to do their bit more willingly, rather than through gritted teeth. He shared how he has been doing his bit personally, locally and nationally to help combat climate change, but also went away with a few ideas to explore as to how he can make more of a difference within our constituency.”

It would be great to have more meetings booked with MPs in the run up to COP26 in November so please do contact me at portsmouth@cafod.org.uk if you are interested in meeting with your MP .
