Many thanks to Cathy Hill our parish volunteer at Corpus Christi Wokingham for organising a meeting with James Sunderland MP for Bracknell on Friday 12th November as part of CAFOD’s Parliament in Your Parish campaign .
Cathy told me ” This much postponed meeting took place in person at the constituency office with James Sunderland, his chief of staff and six CAFOD supporters – four from St Joseph’s parish in Bracknell and two from Corpus Christi in Wokingham – on the last day of COP26 in Glasgow. We were able to express our concerns on AID, distribution of VACCINES and unpayable DEBT but unfortunately ran over our allotted 45 minutes before covering the climate crisis in any detail. Mr Sunderland was welcoming and listened to us . He was able to find out figures for the number of vaccines given away by the government to those in need and, also, the numbers pledged by the end of this year and 2022.”
Thank you to Anne, Bill, Kate , Louise and John who also attended the meeting.
Wow what a fantastic Harvest meeting we had last night at St Joseph & St Margaret Clitherow Church in Bracknell. Thank you to Yvonne Scott and Bill Taylor our parish volunteers there for organising the meeting and providing the refreshments . Forty-three people came to hear about CAFOD’s work in Peru, and Uganda which is our focus country for Harvest Fast day 2019. They were a mixture of our parish volunteers from Reading, Berkshire and Great Park Pastoral Areas and a large number of parishioners from St Joseph & St Margaret Clitherow parish. Many thanks to Fr Danny for encouraging them to come!
Thank you to Jess Michelmore our Communications Officer for Latin America who gave an inspiring talk about CAFOD’s work with our partners Warmi Huasi in Lima. Warmi Huasi provide safe places for children to play and study in the outskirts of Lima. It also helps the children improve their own environment by getting involved with local government. This has been so successful that now 70% of the costs of running the Warmi Huasi ‘s Children clubs are now being provided by the community themselves!
This Harvest our focus country is Uganda. Fabiano is a 14 years old boy who lives in Karamoja Uganda and until recently he had to walk 5 km each day to collect water for his family. But donations from CAFOD supporters have enabled local experts to build a solar powered pump in Fabiano’s village and now it only takes him 3 minutes to collect water. This means that Fabiano has more time for his studies and also growing vegetables for his family.
