Maidenhead’s BIG Walk for Water!

Many thanks to parishioners from St Edmund Campion and St Joseph’s parishes in Maidenhead for taking part in the BIG Walk for Water and for raising over £2500 for CAFOD’s ‘ Lent Appeal which is just amazing! Martha and Deryk even carried bottles of water with them .Deryk carried 12.5kg and Martha 6.5kg and they walked 11.5k in 2 hours! Martha said it was ”  a sombre reminder of the gruelling struggle people living in water poverty face.”

Carolyn said “I am doing the walk as it is quite a sobering thought that while I walk 5 miles just for pleasure and exercise many people in the world have to do it daily just to collect their water supply which we only have to turn on a tap for. I will think of this while I walk and pray the world will be a fairer place one day.”

The Dukes family said “We decided as a family to take part in ‘The Big Walk for Water’ to help those that don’t have easy access to a natural resource that we sometimes take for granted in the UK. Hoping our small effort can make a difference in someone’s everyday life.”

Patrick and Isobel said “It was a great privilege to be able to walk in solidarity with our fellow parishioners and friends, albeit separated by time and distance, in order to support our brothers and sisters who have no choice but to spend their days seeking valuable water in order to survive. Ten minutes into our walk we experienced a very light sprinkling of rain which reminded us of the reason we were undertaking our walk – to show our support for ABDELLA, his family and the many families around the world who face the same difficulties on a daily basis!”

Deborah said “Jesus message to us was very simple “Love God, and love your neighbour as yourself”. I cannot claim to be loving to my neighbour when I am allowing them not to have access to clean and safe water. CAFOD gives us the opportunity to reach neighbours who may usually be beyond our reach. Access to clean water is also very personal for me. When my mother died 10 years ago her wish was to have no floral tributes at her funeral but instead for all money to go to water aid. In supporting the Big Walk for Water, I feel I am living my mother’s dying wish.”

So thank you all for taking part and special thanks to Laura for organising the group. Your support is amazing ! Click here to donate to their just giving page.
