Please Sainsbury’s Don’t Ditch Fairtrade Tea!

Campaigners outside Sainsbury's AGM

Campaigners outside Sainsbury’s AGM

Please help us to encourage Sainsbury’s not to ditch fairtrade tea. Sainsbury’s is one of the largest retailers of fairtrade goods  but unfortunately they have decided to abandon Fairtrade certification on some of their own- brand tea products and pilot their own scheme instead know as “fairly traded”.

Tea farmers in Africa have publicly opposed the move away from the Fairtrade Mark as it takes away their power to decide where to invest the Fairtrade Premium in their communities. We are concerned that this new ‘Fairly Traded’ tea, and any products that follow it, could mean an unfair deal for poor farmers.

So please make your concern known by following these 3 steps

  • Step 1: Personalise and print our letter to Sainsbury’s and get as many people in your parish to sign it
  • Step 2: Print our ‘Ditching Fairtrade: Not my cup of tea’ mug and take a group photo with it outside your local Sainsbury’s
  • Step 3: Hand in the letter to the local store manager. You can go one step further by purchasing a box of ‘Fairly Traded’ tea and then return it immediately with the letter, explaining why you don’t want Sainsbury’s ditching Fairtrade.

A day of action is being planned for Saturday 28th October so do get involved. If you want to organise a group action you can find an organiser’s guide, Fairtrade mug props, fliers and even a template press release on the Don’t Ditch Fairtrade website. Plan your event, take pictures on the day and send them to me so that I can put them on the blog.

Many thanks
