Many thanks to the fantastic CAFOD group at St Edward’s church Chandler’s Ford for organising a Bring & Buy to raise money for Connect2 Peru on Wednesday 17th May. Many people supported the event by bringing in items to sell such as books, jams, honey and cakes. Tea and coffee was provided so that the shoppers could have a well earned rest and an amazing £400 was raised to help CAFOD projects in Peru.
Connect2 Peru supports two projects in Peru one in the outskirts of Lima and one in the mountains in Cruz de Mayo. Peru is one of the countries most affected by climate change in the world. The mountain glaciers are a very important source of water for most people living in Peru, but they are disappearing. The Cruz de Mayo Community relies on melt water from glaciers above Lake Parón for its water supply. At the same time, the Community members are observing changes in the weather patterns – the rainy seasons are becoming shorter and the dry seasons much more extended.
Our partner CEAS is working with the Cruz de Mayo Community to look at possibilities for developing sustainable livelihoods where they currently live. CEAS and the Cruz de Mayo Community are specifically aiming for an environmentally sound economic development: one that makes sustainable use of land and water in a context of high vulnerability to climate change.
