A huge thank you to everyone from St Thomas’ in St Helier and CAFOD supporters throughout Jersey who all came together throughout March and April to eat simple Lenten lunches and raised a total of £2,047 for our work overseas this Lent. We salute you! Thank you all so much!
The series of Lenten soup lunches this year continued an annual tradition that has been taking place for at least 15 years. Over 50 people attended each lunch and all have enjoyed the delicious homemade soups on offer, with flavours varying from spring vegetable to fish soup.
CAFOD volunteer and CAFOD Jersey Secretary, Phil McDermott said:
“This is a great CAFOD island and there is abundant goodwill towards CAFOD in the parish. It’s a happy band that comes to the soup lunches and we all enjoy coming together each week to raise money for CAFOD.”
This Lent, CAFOD is promoting its work in Zambia. It is estimated that over half of Zambians live below the poverty line. This means that many families do not have enough money to meet basic needs such as food, housing and clothing.
CAFOD’s partners in Zambia provide training in fish farming, beekeeping and crop farming as well as helping individuals within communities develop business skills so those most in need understand how to get a better price for their goods, market them and even set up business partnerships.
By training individuals in the community, they will be able to share their new knowledge and empower the whole community. The money raised in Jersey will mean that CAFOD’s partners will be able to continue to support projects like this around the world.
