Good luck to all our CAFOD Young Leaders who are busy organising a special basketball tournament this week at Oaklands Catholic School & Sixth Form College in Waterlooville in aid of our Lenten appeal!
The students told us,
“Instead of relying on donations we wanted to do some active fundraising instead as it helps get more people involved. By arranging something more memorable than a small collection we also hope it will raise more awareness for CAFOD.”
“We think the Lent campaign is especially important this year, as it not only highlights the great importance of clean water sources in parts of the world that don’t have access to it, but also shows its effect on education, development and careers.
“Pushing towards clean water for all those who are unable to access this very basic human right is a vital step we need to make in the world, and this campaign will help us achieve it.”
The money raised by the school community at Oaklands will give children, particularly girls, around the world, a better chance of being able to go to school – girls such as 15-year old Guti from Uganda.
Guti nearly dropped out of school because there was no clean, safe water and she had to walk to the river for water to drink or to wash. CAFOD partners were able to repair the water pump near Guti’s school, provide a portable sink and soap for handwashing, and train teachers to help pupils learn good hygiene routines. This has meant fewer pupils miss school due to illness and some girls are taking high-school exams that only boys took before.
Watch our film of Guti’s story below:
The money raised from this week’s event in aid of our Lenten appeal will help us ‘Make a Splash’ across the world by repairing or providing water pumps and training in order to maintain them. It will also help fund hygiene programmes, education in sanitation and the building of latrines.
And what’s even better – all the funds raised will have double the impact this year because we have secured UK Aid Match Funding for our Lenten appeal. This means that the UK government will match pound for pound every donation made to the appeal – up to the value of £3.5M. Terrific!
Thank you so much everyone at Oaklands Catholic School for helping our partners ‘Make a Splash’ and provide clean water and better sanitation for thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, and Uganda.
Has this inspired you to run your own fundraising event? Take a look at our host of fundraising ideas and ‘how to guides’ and don’t forget – all proceeds from events like these held in aid of our Lenten appeal up to 9 May will qualify for match funding! Hooray!
