Let’s put our full support behind our Great South runners this year – Christie Garson and Mike Wood! Hooray! Christie and Mike will be taking on the 10 mile course on Sunday 25 October in Portsmouth to raise money for CAFOD. Let’s hope the weather’s kind!
This will be the first time Christie (who also lives in Portsmouth) has run the Great South Run for CAFOD and she’s ready to go!
She told us,
“Having spent most of my life in Africa, I have seen the impact that just a couple of pounds (or even pence!) can make to the lives of poor and vulnerable people. When people are left hopeless as a result of famine, disease or disaster, receiving aid is a blessing, a miracle, a lifeline that ignites a hope and happiness deep within. By helping me raise money to give to CAFOD we become distributors of that hope and happiness.”

Mike Wood, a parishioner of St Boniface in Southampton and teacher at St Peter’s in Bournemouth, is a veteran runner of this race and this will be his tenth one! Last year he told us,
‘The whole atmosphere last year was great! The bands were fantastic along the way and the drummers were awesome! There were even families doing karaoke in their front gardens with music booming out of speakers as we passed! ‘
‘All my family and friends were at the Cathedral cheering us on. We raised about £600 with lot of sponsorship form colleagues, friends and our very supportive parish. They’ve all been excellent.
‘I think it’s really important to raise money for CAFOD’s work but also to raise awareness about what we do to bring about a fairer world, one that celebrates our similarities rather than focuses on what divides us.’

I hope the training is going well! Good luck to you both! For more information on the Great South Run – look at our ‘Events’ page.
