What a great turn out they had at the Summer Fete held at Our Lady Immaculate, Westbourne last Saturday! An amazing £929.45 was raised for CAFOD’s work in Brazil!
CAFOD volunteer, Susan Kelly, told us that the parish was inspired to raise this money after learning about the poor housing conditions of many Brazilian communities during this year’s World Cup.
“I was horrified to learn that the total cost of hosting the event was £8.8 billion. This could have paid for more than two million new homes in a country where one fifth of the population are living in poverty.
“I spoke to other CAFOD supporters about it and we felt we couldn’t sit back and do nothing” she said, ‘so we organised this fete to help CAFOD’s partners so they can continue to carry out their vital work in calling for better housing and public services in São Paulo.
“We had stalls on the approach to the church in the alleyway and three competitions in the porch, including ‘Number of sweets in the jar’, ‘Find the buried treasure map’ and ‘Guess Teddy’s birthday’. The rest of the stalls and cream teas were downstairs in the hall.
“The church was open for visitors to enter; one middle aged man had not been to this church since he was six. Lots of people commented on how beautiful the church was and one visitor commented on the fact “that we are more open these days”! One parishioner who has been in the parish for over 30 years was very excited and could not recall ever having a church fete.
“We had a marvelous response from the parish and donations of various kinds. Many parishioners, from children to grown ups, helped run all the stalls. Father Bill gave tremendous support to the whole venture before , during and after the event, even urging parishioners on the Sunday to come down to the hall before leaving church and collecting something and make a donation.”
How terrific! Thank you ALL so much for putting on such a great community event to support our partners.
