Childhood friends, Sophie Pearson, Lexi Rae and Kate Murelli will be running the London Marathon this year. The trio, who have been friends since primary school, are fundraising for CAFOD.
Sophie spoke to us about her friendship with Kate and Lexi and their marathon journey so far.
“Kate and Lexi are two of my oldest and closest friends. We went to primary school together (St. John the Baptist) and then Secondary (Bishop Challoner, Basingstoke). We never thought this would be something that we would be doing together! However, it has been an incredible journey that we are on and have shared, supported and encouraged one another through the highs and lows; they are legends and certainly inspire me with their determination and spirit! I feel there is us together, but also our wonderful loved ones who have been incredible in their love and support, enabling us to do this to the best of our ability – and putting up with our need for sleep, food and marathon talk!”
Sophie, a teacher at St John the Baptist primary school in Andover, said: “As a teacher in a Catholic school, CAFOD does brilliant things to raise the awareness of children to realise that even by making small changes in our lives, we can help to make difference to those who need it most.”
This is the first time that all three friends have run the London Marathon.
Sophie said: “Running the London Marathon has always been something that I have wanted to do. Having been a spectator as a child and then more recently cheering my sister-in-law on, I was keen to enter the ballot. Kate, Lexi and I were all working on increasing our fitness at this point and all decided to be a little crazy and enter the ballot; this certainly did seem crazy when we had all built up running from nothing in 2013.
“We made a pact that we would support one another and perhaps try to go for charity places and fundraise together if we were unlucky in the ballot. Pretty much unheard of, but Lexi and Kate both got ballot places on a first time basis. I knew that this was too good an opportunity to pass up.”
Speaking on why they decided to fundraise for CAFOD, Sophie said: “CAFOD is a charity that we all support and the girls were keen to join forces to raise as much money as possible. There is no doubt that we have personally benefitted from taking part in this journey, going through all kinds of highs and lows. However, doing it knowing that we are contributing to change in people’s lives who need it most and in a constructive way supported by CAFOD, keeps us going putting one foot in front of another. You’ll probably hear whoop whoops from us if we see any supporters or pass the CAFOD stations.”
Sophie, Kate and Lexi have already received a lot of support from their family, friends and residents of Andover.
Sophie said: “We have held a fun run at St John the Baptist Primary School where children dressed up as marathon runners for the day, and Lexi was the driving force in organising our CAFOD Runners’ Raffle – raising over £1,500. We sold tickets with parishioners, work colleagues, friends and family at St John the Baptist Church, Andover and St. John Fisher, Whitchurch. We were staggered and overwhelmed by their support – and their love of homemade cakes at the raffle draw.”
Well done Sophie, Kate and Lexi! We think what you’re doing is amazing!
