Meet our Marathon Runners: Maura Farrelly

The London Marathon is just 22 days away! And while that might not seem like much time at all, those taking part have been preparing for the big day for months.

You will probably remember that we published a post on Mugeni’s London Marathon preparation, but you may not know that we have a number of other runners in the diocese taking part.

Maura is an office manager at Blessed Hugh Faringdon School, Reading. This year, she’ll also be taking part in the London Marathon as part of Team CAFOD. Maura started running 10 years ago after a colleague passed away from Breast Cancer, and a group from the school entered the Race for Life.

“At that point I could barely run for a bus, but I discovered a competitive streak, lost three stone in weight and the rest is history!”

Now Maura is a regular runner and a member of Reading running club, Reading Joggers. This will be her third time running the London Marathon, but it is the first time she has chosen to fundraise for charity.

Speaking on why she chose to run for CAFOD, Maura said: “Our Ash Wednesday liturgies at school made me think about what I could do as something extra this Lent. As I already had the place in the marathon fundraising seemed an obvious choice.”

Maura’s sister will also be running the London Marathon this year, but they will be starting at different points.

“My sister is running for South West Thames Kidney Fund, her children have 50% chance of inheriting adult polycystic kidney disease. She will also be at a different start area but I hope we meet at the finish.”

On St Patrick’s Day, Maura dressed up as Leprechaun as part of her fundraising events. She’ll still be sporting some CAFOD green on the big day and swapping her leprechaun costume for some more traditional running gear.

She said: “I will wear the CAFOD running vest and look forward to huge cheers of support at CAFOD cheering points.”

Well done Maura! We’ll definitely be cheering her on on the 13th April!
