Today, CAFOD joins forces with almost 100 UK NGOs and agencies to launch a new coalition campaign on food and hunger – Enough Foor for Everyone IF. Our aim is to make 2013 the beginning of the end of the global hunger crisis.
We believe that there is enough food in the world to feed everyone – it’s the global food system and the way food is grown and shared that it’s failing. We can change this IF we challenge world leaders to do four things…
IF we force governments and investors to be honest and open about the deals they make in the poorest countries that stop people getting enough food.
IF governments keep their promises on aid, invest to stop children dying from malnutrition and help the poorest people feed themselves through investment in small farmers.
IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and use the available agricultural land to grow food for people, not biofuels for cars.
IF governments stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries, so that millions of people can free themselves from hunger.
In June this year, the UK will be hosting the G8 (in Northern Ireland on 17/18 June). Aid, tax, land and transparency are all on the agenda. There will also be a Hunger Summit ahead of the conference. This is an unprecedented opportunity to show world leaders that we won’t stop until everyone has access to enough food.
But for IF to make a really big impact, we need YOU! Please sign up to IF today at www.cafod.org.uk/if and ask all your friends and family to do the same! Watch the IF launch animation and share it on Facebook and Twitter.
Visit the IF website and find out more about the campaign and how you can get involved. We will of course keep you posted throughout the year and ask you to take action in different ways.
In our diocese, there will be 2 local launches on Friday 25 January: one in Winchester at 2pm at Winchester Cathedral (West Doors) and one in Reading at 12 noon at St Lawrence’s church in Friar Street. Please come along and join in if you live nearby!!
Together, we can make IF happen! Thank you for your support.
