First-ever CAFOD Portsmouth Golf Day – a success!

Our first-ever CAFOD Portsmouth Golf Day, to mark our 50th anniversary, took place on Tuesday 29 May at Royal Winchester Golf Club and was a great success!

Nine teams coming from all across the diocese “battled” on the beautiful club grounds, enjoying the sunshine and the summery weather. Prizes were awarded for best 3 of 4 cards for teams and also best individual scores. There were also special competitions, “Longest Drive” and “Nearest the Pin”, as well as a par 3 challenge.

The Aristocats team!

The overall winner was the team from local groundwork company Gracelands, who had very generously sponsored all the team prizes! Well done to them! The WokCats team from Wokingham came second and the Swincats from Winchester came third.

Winning team: Gracelands

After the game we enjoyed a delicious carvery dinner at the club restaurant. Our director Chris Bain joined us for the occasion and thanked everybody for taking part in the day and for their support of CAFOD.

A raffle, organised by Cecily Exworthy, also helped with the fundraising, together with a special “£2 challenge” at Hole 7, where people had to bet £2 and try to get their tee shot to land on the green. On the day, we raised a fantastic total of £1,261.83, which is brilliant!!

The WokCats with Chris Bain!

Overall, it was a really enjoyable day and certainly something we would like to repeat in future years if possible. This event would not have taken place at all if it hadn’t been for our volunteer Roger Lillie, who took care of the whole organisational aspect and secured such a brilliant venue—thank you so much to Roger for all his help!!

We would also like to thank his great team of helpers: John Marchesi, John Harrington, Mark Herbic and Pat Feighery for assisting with the organisation, Margaret Lillie and Wendy Penton for helping with registration on the day, Simon Grummit (our parish contact at Hedge End) for marshalling the course and sponsoring the individual prize, John Harrington for sponsoring the Longest Drive prize, Cecily Exworthy for organising the raffle and of course our director Chris Bain for attending. A very special thanks also goes to Gracelands for their great generosity and to Daverio Matteucci, owner of Keats Restaurant in Ampfield, for sponsoring hole 18. And last but not least, thanks to all our fabulous players who came along, and to all staff at the Royal Winchester Golf Club who were so helpful and welcoming on the day.

We really had a great time! 🙂

  1. Roger thanks for a great day on a most interesting and challenging course. Also for teaming me up with Carmel and Roger who were great companions. Hope it is Gods will that we meet up next year – and that I remember to bring a tie (haven’t worn one for ten years – apart from one or two funerals!) God Bless. Tom
