Congratulations to all our amazing runners who took part in the Junior Great South Run last Saturday and in the main Great South Run on Sunday in Southsea, Portsmouth!
It has been a real pleasure to welcome you all on the day and to hear all your inspiring personal stories about why you decided to run for CAFOD!
Sam and Alex were CAFOD’s stars in the Junior Run – Alex was running it for the second time and determined to improve his time, while for Sam it was his first running challenge – which he found exhausting but worthwhile. But why not hear from them directly what they had to say? 🙂
Early on Sunday morning we battled against a fierce wind to set up all the CAFOD sail flags and banners to decorate the Royal Beach Hotel where we were based! Of course, the struggle against the wind was much harder for our runners… but they all made it and successfully completed the course – and it was great to see so many of you at the hotel both before and after the race!
We had a lovely mixture of seasoned runners and first-time runners. Among the first category, congratulations to Karen West and Mike Wood who had been running for CAFOD for the 5th time, and Kevin Lawler who is also a long-standing CAFOD Great South Run supporter! Below is what Kevin and Mike had to say:
Among the first-time runners were Oaklands teachers Laura Caspall and Amalia Goméz Lopéz, who run as a school team together with RE teacher Mugeni Sumba and two sixth formers who, as you will remember, went to Kenya with CAFOD earlier this year!
Mugeni had taken part in the Great South Run before, but it was the first time he run with a team – and for him this was the best part of this year’s experience: it was all about caring for others and “working in partnership”, just like CAFOD does!

Lastly – Colin Eames from St John Bosco’s parish in Woodley gave us a really moving and inspiring testimony about why he took part in the event (with thanks to our fab volunteer Rita who had inspired him!)!
Congratulations again to everybody – including Stephanie Churchill and Victoria Silsbury from Southampton, Gill Koch from Wantage and Rebecca Volk from Romsey.
We really enjoyed the day and meeting you all!!
Next year, as you know, is the 50th anniversary of CAFOD and we hope to see as many of old and new runners as possible in Portsmouth! 🙂
