Christ the King Primary Celebrates Fast Day

‘So I musn’t forget, No I musn’t forget,

To say a great big thank you, I musn’t forget!’

These were the words of the opening hymn sung beautifully by all the pupils at Christ the King RC Primary at a special Mass celebrated by Father Pat Madden at Christ the King parish on CAFOD’s Harvest Fast Day in Whitley, Reading.

During Mass we spent time remembering all the things God has so generously given us and in his homily Father Pat reminded us of the importance of sharing what we have so that everybody has what they need.   Pupils then put their faith into action in the offertory as they brought up food items from home to be distributed locally and some Fast Day envelopes for CAFOD which will be used to support families from some of the poorest communities around the world.

CAFOD School Volunteer Linda Heneghan said, ‘Everyone at Christ the King is really putting their hearts into it today by praying for others both locally and around the world at this special Mass, giving up something they would normally have today, and donating the money saved to CAFOD.  It’s a great opportunity for the children to recognise that they are part of one global family, and that by helping others they can make the world a better place.”

Linda had visited the school the previous week to talk about Eric and his brothers and sisters from Rwanda.  Despite losing their parents, Eric and his family have come together with others in their village to start a successful business.  With CAFOD’s help they are now building a new life for themselves.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Linda, Father Pat, Headteacher Mr Cosgrove, the parents and all the staff for all their fantastic support.  Thank you too for organising what was a really lovely Mass with brilliant readers and excellent music.  A special thank you to the infants that sang a special song after Communion (with accompanying actions!) and all the pupils who really put their hearts into the whole service! Thank you too to the parishioners who helped me set up our equipment and who were so welcoming when I arrived.     You all made it a great Harvest Fast Day that I’ll remember for a long time to come!  Thank you!
