At the Great South Run this year, in Southsea on 24th October, we’ll have a very special runner to cheer for: our brilliant supporter and volunteer Bruce Finch, from Portsmouth Cathedral! Bruce has helped us twice before in the charity tent – but instead of getting discouraged by the terrible weather, this year he has decided to take a big step forward and run for us – and we are obviously delighted! 🙂
Here is what he said…
“I’ve been volunteering with CAFOD for 4 years, doing media, speaking, campaigning and fundraising – as well as helping out at two VERY wet Great South Runs. In that time in Portsmouth we ‘ve raised over £11000 for CAFOD. This year I thought I’d take the plunge (!) and join Team CAFOD running the Great South Run to raise as much money as possible for CAFOD’s work in education (where £7 will buy a school uniform, £17 school fees, uniform and books for a child for a year). I’ve already met my CAFOD target through some very generous donations from family and work colleagues and have set myself a target of running the GSR in 90 minutes. The training is challenging but curiously enjoyable – my work clothes are already becoming looser! I look forward to seeing as many supporters as possible on the day but ask for your prayers if you can’t be there in person.”
You can sponsor Bruce by visiting his JustGiving page – just click here, it is safe and easy to donate. At the time of writing, Bruce has already raised £360 – which is fantastic since we’re only in July!
If you are free on 24th October – do come along and join our merry band of cheerers! We will provide placards, baloons, brollies in case of rain (but believe it or not – it was sunny last year!) and refreshments. It is great fun and all our runners have said they just could not make it to the finish line without that precious support!
We will post more information nearer the time – in the meantime, good luck to Bruce (and all other runners who have started preparing for the event) for his training!!
