Last Saturday I was lucky enough to be invited to the AGM of the Union of Catholic Mothers (UCM) in the Portsmouth Diocese. Many members from all over the diocese were there and it was a great opportunity to thank them for all their support over the past 50 years – on this the 50th anniversary year of Fast Day.
The UCM and CWL were of course instrumental in organising and supporting the very first Fast Day and some of the members told me that they remembered their families taking part way back in 1960. There were many reports given over the course of the meeting which had the same theme as my talk – the extraordinary power of women to make huge changes in the world. It was great to take some time out to think about our founders and the sheer determination and hard work that went into organising the very first Fast Day – which has since raised £65 million and transformed the lives of millions of people around the world.
