Last Sunday, I was invited to attend the CAFOD Corpus Christi CAFOD Team’s afternoon tea party to celebrate the agency’s 50th anniversary.
Supporters from across this brilliant parish in Boscombe, Bournemouth gathered together to hold what is definitely the first 50th anniversary event held in this diocese – if not across England and Wales!
The cakes (and company!) were superb! Everyone really enjoyed the tea and it was great to get so many people from across the parish together to thank them for all their support and prayers over the years.
Father Denis Blackledge and Father David welcomed everyone and were both hugely supportive of the event and of CAFOD itself – Father Denis sporting our Climate Justice t-shirt throughout the day! The Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth also came along to take part and spoke out in support of the agency. Terrific!
During the tea – we took a little time out to reflect on the past 50 years and specifically what first drew us all into the fight against poverty and injustice.
We looked back on the faith of our original founders and their hard work which brought about the establishment of our international agency.
We also reflected on the injustice we still see in our world – especially with regards to water and our continuing thirst for change.
At the end of the afternoon, we shared a special cake made by Teresa at St Thomas More parish in Bournemouth. I’ve never seen one like that. Beautiful – with our World Gifts motif on and a reference to the Walk for Justice that we held at the parish last year. Lovely! Thank you so much Teresa!
Our heartfelt thanks go to the CAFOD team at Corpus Christi and all the volunteers who made the cakes, served the tea and set up the room so beautifully. Thank you too to Father Denis, Father David and the Mayor & Mayoress for all their support and to everyone who attended. A great start to this very special year!
